Decentralized, Open DNS To Combat Web Censorship By Authorities

In the wake of recent actions by US authorities to seize domains that were allegedly involved in piracy and copyright infringement, a group of enthusiasts led by the Pirate Bay’s co-founder Peter Sunde have started working on an alternative DNS that can potentially be out of reach of government institutions.

The Dot-P2P will be a free, decentralized and open DNS system that will neither rely on any ISP’s DNS service nor on ICANN, but will depend on people who would distribute it using a BitTorrent-based application installed on their systems. The domains created out of the Dot-P2P project will have a .p2p TLD (top-level domain such as .com or .org) that will be registered by OpenNIC.

The people behind the project say that they were tired of authorities’ increasing censorship on the web and that they want to preserve a free and open internet.
